Through the My First Books program a quality children’s book is given to each family who visits one of the seven ELC Family Service Centers. Word Garden "Giving Libraries" are located in each Family Service Center and books are displayed so that children can choose one of interest.
ELC staff members help parents identify various ways they can support their children’s literacy development. Surrounding children in positive language by reading books, singing songs, and asking questions can have a positive impact on a child's literacy and language development. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of "teachable" moments to extend their child's language and vocabulary. During a trip to the grocery store or on a casual walk, parents can use language to teach children about the world around them.
The ELC is able to distribute books thanks to the generosity of community partners and donors. During the 2011 - 2012 fiscal year, the ELC was able to distribute more than 10,000 books to children in the Big Bend Region.
