Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten
The Voluntary Pre-kindergarten (VPK) legislation was signed into
law by Governor Jeb Bush on January 2, 2005. This law created a
program intended to prepare every four-year-old in the state of
Florida for kindergarten and build a strong foundation for their
continued educational success. The State Constitution was amended
to include the VPK program.
The VPK program is a free, voluntary program that parents of 4
year old children can choose to participate in through either a
school year program for a total of 540 instructional hours or a
summer program for a total of 300 instructional hours. Parents can
also choose whether or enroll their child in a public school or
a preschool program offered by a private provider.
VPK providers have flexibility in how they design their program
as long as they meet the required number of instructional hours,
staffing requirements, and class sizes. Parents can choose the program
that best meets their child's individual needs.
