My First Books

The ELC supports families as they help their children develop early literacy skills by providing them with quality children’s books and family literacy education.

Through the My First Books program, a quality children’s book is given to each family who visits one of the seven ELC Family Service Centers. Word Gardens “Giving Libraries” are located in each Family Service Center and books are displayed so that children can choose one of interest.

ELC staff members help families identify various ways they can support their children’s literacy development. Surrounding children in positive language by reading books, singing songs, and asking questions can have a positive impact on a child’s literacy and language development. Families are encouraged to take advantage of “teachable” moments to extend their child’s language and vocabulary. During a trip to the grocery store or on a casual walk, families can use language to teach children about the world around them.
